Virtual CIO: Small Business Tech Talk. Episode 2.
Chris: Hi, everyone. I’m Chris, Technical Services Supervisor here at Exigent Technologies. Welcome to another edition of “Small Business Tech Talk.” Today’s topic is Virtual CIO. Joining me to discuss this important role and discuss some of the benefits of the Virtual CIO services is none other than our own VCIO and Lead software architect Paul Bender. Hi Paul! How are you?
Paul: Good, Chris. Thanks for having me today.
Chris: Let’s start by having you define CIO and what is a CIO actually does.
Paul: Well, Chris a CIO stands for Chief Information Officer. A CIO in most enterprise level companies is an executive level I.T. professional who would provide strategic high level technology guidance, as well as budgetary recommendation as far as technology is concerned. And typically would oversee the IT or technology department in the company. Most CIOs are excellent communicators and are pretty boardroom savvy.
Chris: This isn’t a role you would typically see in a smaller business is it?
Paul: No, not usually. This is usually relegated to enterprise level companies. The funny thing is that most small and medium businesses are in dire need of some of the services, the special breed of services that a CIO can bring them. The trouble is that maintaining a full-time CIO can tend to be pretty expensive proposition. Most small, medium businesses as well as any company are on a very tight budget, but oddly enough they are usually need a special subset of what a CIO brings to them.
Chris: Can you tell us how Virtual CIO services helps solve that problem?
Paul: Sure. A Virtual CIO services is think of a Virtual CIO as a part-time or fractional CIO. This allows us to give only the services that are specifically required for that particular client. And do it on an as needed or hourly basis.
Chris: So what are some of the specific benefits that a business owner or an executive might gain when they retain a Virtual CIO?
Paul: There are number of benefits. I’m going to stick to the primary three. First is the affordability as I mention to you before. VCIO is available on a per diem or as need basis and that controls costs. The second is the technology and business savvy that a VCIO brings to the table. IT pro for many years as well as the vast expanse in experience in the boardroom. And last but certainly not least is the collective knowledge that a VCIO bring to the business from all their other clients and interactions with other vendors and partners in the IT world.
Chris: Let’s say someone out there is watching owns a small business and they have an IT person or an entire IT department for that matter but they don’t have a virtual CIO or a CIO of any kind. Can that type of person benefit from this offering?
Paul: Absolutely. Your high level strategic IT guidance is the key to any successful technology road map for any company. A lot of folks who have IT staff or IT people they’ve hired, they’ve hired network admins or system admins, and those folks are technical experts. Excellent at what they do in technology but commonly are limited in their communication skills or specifically in the area of communicating difficult technical concepts to non technical people. A VCIO as I’ve always said lives one foot in the boardroom and one foot in the server room. So they are to use a common language to be able to impart those concepts on a non technical people.
Chris: It’s no secret that Exigent Technologies offers various IT products and services. Can a company use Exigent VCIO offering while using another IT company for their other outsource needs?
Paul: Absolutely. As a VCIO our primary responsibilities is to act as a steward for the technology and business best interest of the client. With that we offer VCIO services in an unbiased and vendor agnostic manner.
Chris: Can you tell us what is this type of engagement looks like?
Paul: Sure. There’s no lengthy contract or commitment. We simply bill by the hour or on a retainer basis as needed.
